There is an old saying that “Healthy mind stays in healthy body”. So eat healthy and stay healthy. Keeping that in mind the students of OOB celebrated the ‘Health is Wealth’ week from 4th to 8th November 2018 to improve the health of their students and to understand the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning, because healthy kids are better prepared to learn.
The Primary department hosted a series of activities which included preparing a ‘Healthy eating book’ by the fourth graders while the third graders did the sorting of good and bad calories. The first graders drew the pictures of various fruits and vegetables related to the colours of a rainbow while the second graders prepared a healthy plate that included the various food groups.
The second day of the week commenced with the survey on healthy food options where the students of grade 4 interviewed the Principal and Headmistress designate regarding their eating habits and also advised them about what they could include in their meals, while grade 3 prepared the perfect healthy school lunch by drawing five different foods and grade 1 and 2 did the sorting of the different foods which are good for our teeth.
Day 3 of the week was extremely exhilarating as students got an opportunity to be the chefs for the day. The students of grade 1 and 2 prepared lemonade while the students of grade 3 prepared a healthy sandwich and grade 4 prepared a fruit salad. They also discussed the contents of their tiffin which included the various food groups and their nutritional value.
Day 4 of the week was super fun and creative as the department of primary invited parents to compete with each other by preparing “Little Veggie Person” using freshly cut vegetables.
Day 5 the culmination of the ‘Health is Wealth’ week witnessed a spectacular assembly by grade 3B on “Health is Wealth” followed by the Headmistress designate’s address and a talk on the importance of health (safety measures to be taken) by our school Doctor. The students also wrote their takeaway from this fruitful week on cut-outs of various fruits.
These activities enabled the students to learn more about the various food groups, their nutritional content and the difference between good and bad calories, and also to tell the difference between foods which are good and bad for our health.
During these activities it was observed that the students had a great learning experience as they understood that - “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver” – Mahatma Ghandi.
Overall, these activities helped the students to get a better understanding of the healthy food habits and it is necessary to live a healthy and peaceful life which needs good health.
