Welcome to The Middle School at Our Own English High School Sharjah - Boys'

The middle grades are a crucial phase wherein we guide our youngsters on the right path toward academic and career success. The significance of this period for learning is perhaps, only surpassed by that of early childhood development. This phase entails developing personality traits, grit, and curiosity along with study habits to making decisions about a future after high school.

Developing the concept of integrated curriculum, we at OOB, unite multiple disciplines, which correlate to the students’ life experiences and interests through thematic units; thus, students are more willing to engage in their learning, and they retain information longer.

Our dedicated team of educators have developed a comprehensive set of practices to deliver appropriate content, which gears towards improving student success and attainment.

Our research-based instructions and interventions for reading, writing and math – and carefully conceived cognitive and advanced reasoning principals (which are critical to develop at this age) and a variety of other resources, covers student supports and spells out ways to assess our efforts.

It also highlights the efforts taken by our educators to help students develop their critical thinking and 21st century skills, which are important during this phase.

Subject Overview

  • Arabic

    The Arabic curriculum represents an important step toward fulfilling the needs of learners of Arabic as an additional language. It is also consistent with UAE's National Agenda for 2021 with regards to the priority of improving the learning of Arabic language. This Curriculum focuses on enabling non-Arabic speakers who are learning Arabic to communicate in real life situations inside and outside school. The Curriculum is based on the standards set by the UAE ministry of Education, and based on international principles and expectations applied in the teaching of foreign languages to non-native speakers. The Curriculum is also adapted to meet the UAE's aspirations in the teaching and learning of Arabic in a manner that suits the learners’ capabilities and their learning environment. The Curriculum illustrates the levels expected to be achieved by the learner in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). It links the achievement of these levels to the number of years spent in studying Arabic, regardless of the learner’s current grade.

  • English

    We aim to develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the students through the extensive study of the English language and Literature. The students are provided with ample scope to develop effective and coherent writing with accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling. Through various in-house programmes and initiatives, the students acquire and apply a wide vocabulary alongside knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.

    The course lays the foundation of promoting higher-order language skills, thereby leading the pupil to harbor greater confidence and proficiency in the use of the language skills. The pedagogy is framed to nurture competitive skills among the pupils for international platform. The course not only provides a substantial knowledge of literature and ability to apply the same, in day to day life, but also a free space for the pupils to express themselves without any fear or inhibition. Our methodology is adept with the dynamisms of the contemporary times that helps us to approach our students with fresh perspective.

  • Mathematics

    We at middle school, aim to ensure that our students become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. They will be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry. They can also solve problems by applying their Mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

    The unique approach used in teaching Math at middle school guarantees that students not only meet the standards of CBSE curriculum, but they ace them too. Students are given ample opportunities to learn by doing Math.

  • Science

    Science is dynamic and boundless body of knowledge, foraging into new horizons and domains of experience. Keeping this in mind our students are encouraged to engage themselves into progressive and proactive thinking. Understanding of Scientific concepts are arrived at mainly from activities and experiments. Students adopt the scientific method involving the interconnected steps of observation, making hypotheses, devising qualitative or mathematical models, deducing their consequences, verification of theories through observations and experiments, and thus concluding the principles, theories and laws.

    We focus on student group activities, discussions with peers and teachers, surveys, organization of data and their display through exhibitions, etc. to kindle scientific temper. Considering recent advances in this field, all the three aspects of Science-Physics, Chemistry and Biology, are identified carefully and treated with appropriate rigor and depth. Science education in our school is aimed at developing competence, encourage inventiveness, creativity and stimulating investigative ability. Inquiry based learning and Problem-solving skills are emphasized and encouraged.

  • Indian Social Studies 

    Indian Social Studies encompass diverse concerns of society and include a wide range of content drawn from the disciplines of History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, and Anthropology. Social Studies perspectives and knowledge are indispensable to building the knowledge base for a just and peaceful society. The aim of teaching Indian Social Studies in Middle School is to instill social values, personal values, constitutional values, and raising students' awareness through critically exploring and questioning of familiar social reality.

    The course aims to enable students to develop a critical understanding of society including new dimensions and concerns, especially given students' own life experiences. It is imperative that students are introduced to universal values in a manner appropriate for their age so that young students become aware of issues related to human dignity and rights.

  • UAE Social Studies

    UAE Social Studies covers geography, culture, world history, local history and civics through storytelling and project-based learning. The curriculum aligns with the UAE Ministry of Education National Social Studies Standards and emphasizes links and relationships between groups of people through change, communications, diversity, science and society. It encourages students to be responsible citizens and residents of the UAE and the world.

    The stories, characters and learning outcomes preserves UAE culture, heritage and traditions and profiles UAE’s leaders and iconic figures. Our lesson plans and activities are research-based and come with assessment techniques. The curriculum is customized to help students to be informed to make decisions for the democratic society in an interdependent world, according to their learning and individual needs. It has come with appropriate age stories with characters based on historical figures. The curriculum also comprises of Maps from pre-historic period to the present UAE and the world.

  • Hindi 

    We aim to develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the students through the extensive study of the Hindi language and literature. The students are provided with ample scope to develop effective and coherent writing with accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling. Through their studies they will also gain an insight into, and a positive attitude towards, other cultures and practices. Students also develop the skills to analyze texts to extract meaning through gist and inference, improve memory skills as well as expressing and justifying their points of view, attitudes, emotions and apply the same, in day to day life. The course lays the foundation of promoting higher-order language skills, thereby leading the pupil to gain greater confidence and proficiency in the use of the language skills.

  • French 

    We lay a strong foundation to create a well-rounded speaker of a language by building upon the four foundations, reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our students explore and learn through different strategies, skills and assessment to get fluency. They learn different cultures, cultivate tolerance and respect every individual. Their learning is evident through the role plays, video making, storytelling, poetry recitation, letter writing, research and project work they do.

  • Malayalam

    Children are engaged through opportunities for meaningful communication where they use contextual cues and prior knowledge for a real purpose. Children’s language learning is increased through opportunities to produce language orally, non-verbally and in writing, in meaningful contexts, throughout the school day (language). 

  • Urdu

    We lay a strong foundation to create a well-rounded speaker of the Urdu language by building upon the four skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our students learn through different strategies, skills and assessment to get fluency. Through their studies they will also get insight into, and a positive attitude towards other culture and practices. Students also develop the skills to analyze texts to extract meaning through the gist, summary writing and inference, improving memory skills, as well as expressing and justifying their point of views.

     

  • Computer Science

    Students are put in the mainstream of growing technology and introduced to the developing technological advancements and latest trends. Apart from the skill training given in mastering MS package and web page design, Artificial Intelligence and design thinking techniques are also incorporated in the curriculum to equip children to face the ever-changing technologies with confidence. We have the Innovative club focusing on coding, R&D and robotics to enhance and polish the IT skills of our students.

  • Islamic Studies

    Islamic Education is taught according to the guidelines stipulated by the ministry curriculum (UAE). The criteria aim to teach Holy Qur’an (with rules of Thajweed), Hadith, Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, Value and Etiquettes and Islamic Identity in both the terms. Moreover, this religious knowledge and ideas connects to their contemporary life in accordance with the lenient teaching of Islam which are characterized by moderation, balance, tolerance, peace, love, harmony, respect for human dignity.

    Subject enrichment projects are also assigned to students in order to increase their knowledge about the religion and to enable them to apply the religious values learnt in classrooms on an individual and societal level. Additionally, students of Islamic Education initiate and execute programs like holding Iftar gatherings and creating awareness about the Islamic Events like Ramadan, Milad An Nabi, Eid, Isara wal Mi’raj across the entire school community.

  • Physical Education

    PE develops students' competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. A high-quality PE curriculum enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. Physical Education is a vast subject and it has been given importance from ages. Modern Physical Education stresses on balanced development of body and mind.

    The students are bound to understand the importance of nutrition, fitness and healthy living. The students through their experiences of sport they develop agility, balance, co-ordination, speed, strength and endurance. In addition, key transferable skills such as leadership and teamwork which are integral to Physical Education lessons are developed. Physical education in middle school is essential to the development of motor skills and enhancement of reflexes. Head eye coordination is improved, as well as good body movements, which helps in the development of healthy body posture.

  • Moral Education Programme

    The Moral Education Programme aims at the holistic development of the children boosting up their morale, upskill their life skills, celebrating the culture of UAE and of different regions, demonstrating the value of tolerance, resilience, unity, sympathy, empathy, responsibility and the like. The activities and projects linked to the core values, take them beyond textbooks and classroom teaching, providing them a fruitful experience to engage with the community on a wider circle and build character traits and ethical values. Interwoven with parental engagement activities, community service and collaborative projects that kindles their creativity, students and parent community get to turn active doing their part for their society. The program fosters the need for staying optimistic, being better role models and leaders, who care for the well-being of the society and the world in general.

Bindu Gopalakrishnan

Having joined the GEMS group in 2002, Bindu has a Masters in English along with a Bachelor’s in Education, with over 16 years of experience as an educator.
