In Conversation With Commander Abhilash Tomy

The Literary Club of Our Own English High School, Sharjah – Boys, hosted an exceptional and inspiring session of “In Conversation With Commander Abhilash Tomy” on Thursday, 18th June, at the Sheikh Zayed Multi-purpose Hall. The event was further graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Michael Guzder, Executive Vice President – GEMS Education; Ms. Lalitha Suresh, Brand Ambassador, GEMS Education and Principal & CEO, Our Own Indian School; Mr. Srivalsan Murugan, Principal & CEO; Ms. Sindhu P. Nair, Vice Principal; along with respected Heads of Sections, supervisors, and faculty members, whose presence added immense dignity and distinction to the occasion.  

Commander Abhilash Tomy, a decorated officer of the Indian Navy and a celebrated solo circumnavigator, captivated the audience with his extraordinary life journey. The heart of the programme lay in the dynamic interaction that followed. Student hosts, Kasinadh Anurag and Joseph Tony, led a thoughtfully curated conversation. Commander Tomy reflected on his formative years, the influence of his father, and his decision to join the Navy, offering students a glimpse into the values that shaped his path. His candid remark that a single day at the Indian Naval Academy could be tougher than days spent battling the Southern Ocean underscored the discipline and mental strength required to succeed.  His perspective—that true leadership lies in balancing responsibility with moral courage—left a lasting impression on the audience.  The discussion also delved into his transition from naval aviation to solo sailing, his experiences during the Golden Globe Race, and the life-altering injury he endured in 2018. Reflecting on his journey of resilience and recovery, and his inspiring return to the race in 2022, he paid heartfelt tribute to the steadfast support of his family, which sustained him through those profoundly challenging times.

In the audience interaction segment, students posed insightful questions on topics ranging from careers in the armed forces to managing academic pressure. Commander Tomy’s responses were both practical and profound, particularly his advice to students on authenticity—emphasising that true growth begins when one stops performing for others and starts to understand oneself.  Shrivardhan Sanil Nair of Grade 11C, an active member of the Art Club, presented a beautifully crafted portrait of Commander Tomy.

The session concluded with a deep sense of admiration and inspiration. Commander Abhilash Tomy’s journey—marked by courage, discipline, and an indomitable spirit—resonated deeply with everyone present. The programme was not merely an interaction, but a transformative experience that encouraged students to dream boldly, act courageously, and persevere relentlessly.  The event indeed brought together students and staff for an unforgettable morning of insight, reflection, and motivation.
